In external Midrash books ("Tsva'at Bnei Ya'akov" and "The Book of Jubilees"), an ancient Jewish tradition that was not included in Kabbalist Midrash is mentioned: The burial of the twelve tribes in Hebron. "And the children of Israel took out the bones of all the sons of Jacob, except the bones of Joseph, and buried them in the field of the Cave of the Patriarchs In the mountain and many returned from Egypt and few of them remained in Hebron".
It should be noted that there are popular traditions that contradict this information, and attribute the burial of the tribes to other areas of the country - each in the possession of his sons.
Sages mention Yosef who said to his brother '... I accept that no one enters the grave of ancestors except three fathers and three mothers'.
(from the "Cave of the Multiplication")
